The Sound Tube

The Sound Tube, Tullamarine Freeway – Melbourne

The Melbourne Gateway is the entrance of Melbourne (from Tullamarine Airport). You can almost see the famous yellow beam up in the left called “Cheesestick”, but you can clearly notice the rows of smaller red beams (the “Zipper” or “rack of lamb”).

Approaching the Sound Tube, a massive steel structure designed to filter the noise.

The tube is 300m (985′) long, 42.4m (139′) wide, and at its high point about 8m (26′) above the roadway deck, providing minimum clearance in the outside lanes of 5.5m (18′). It is all done in a regular galvanized steel finish. – Tollroads Newsletter, Feb 1999.
